Is Claystone Waterproof?
Cemher Claystone is a decorative material applied to internal walls and ceilings (non wet area) Once sealed however it is very water reisitant. Far more so than traditional venetian plaster as our sealers are the highest perfoming on the Australian market.

What sealer is used with Claystone?
The sealer we use for Claystone is Aquapur20. AP2o is a 2part penetrating sealer that achieves deep sealing and a beautiful matt finish with a very slight sheen level.

Please note: Claystone only uses Aquapur20 and not the Aquapur70 that is used with the microcement system.
Does Claystone have to be textured or can it be smooth?
Claystone can be applied smooth with no texture or can be highly textured with depth and pitting.
Can Claystone be burnished?
Yes and No. Claystone can be burnished by applying extra pressure with the trowel as the material begins to dry. This creates darker tonal marks, which can enhance the aesthetic on darker colours.
If you prefer the finish to have no burnishing marks, you should apply lighter pressure when applying your top coats or use a plastic trowel for finishing.
Will there be visible joins or grout lines?
No. claystone is completely seamless, there are no grout lines or visible joins. This gives the space a clean, continuous look.

Can I use Claystone on Floors?

Should I fill the joints and screw holes in the wall sheets prior to Claystone?
Yes, skim the joints using a suitable wall filler or joint compound prior. Sikaflex can also be used to fill any screw holes.
Do I need to apply a sealer undercoat to plasterboard before Claystone?
For newly plastered walls, prepare the surface to a smooth finish as per standard paint-ready specifications.
Apply a sealer undercoat to mitigate banding effects and ensure strong primer adhesion.
How do I prepare the substrate ready for Claystone?
The surface must be clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, dirt, or loose paint. Any flaking or unstable coatings should be removed.

What if there are moisture issues in the wall substrate?
These must be resolved before applying claystonet. It should only be applied over sound substrates with a moisture content less that 5% when tested with a moisture metre.

What is the system thickness of Claystone?
Claystone can be as little as 2mm applied in 2 x 1mm thick applications or built up to 6mm for a highly textured and even undulated effect.
How is Claystone applied?
Claystone is hand-applied in two coats using a trowel. After the final coat dries, it is sealed with CEMHER Aquapur20 to enhance durability and resistance.

Are there any tips for applying Claystone for the best finish?
Yes, for optimal results, always apply the first coat of Claystone tightly to the primed substrate and allow it to dry completely.

When applying the second coat, lightly mist the first coat surface ahead of you using a spray bottle. This prevents the first coat from absorbing the moisture too quickly, making application smoother and faster.

To achieve a refined, uniform finish and avoid unwanted burnishing marks, apply the final top coat with light pressure. This technique ensures a consistent mineral appearance across the entire surface.
Should I sand between Claystone coats?
Yes, we recommend sanding between coats, including the final coat. Claystone should be sanded lightly with only 240grit and higher. Do not apply too much pressure or over-sand. We always advise using a dustless sander for dust control. Full hardening will be achieved once sealed and cured for 7 days.
How should I trowel out from the internal corners?
Trowel out from the internal corner, completing one surface at a time. Once dry, move to the opposite wall. This avoids working directly beside a wet surface and ensures cleaner edges.
What trowels should I purchase for Claystone?
The Cemher trowel is a versatile option, suitable for both claystone and microcement. Alternatively, the plastic flex trowels are a good option to avoid burnishing marks.

Is Claystone more durable than paint or limewash?
