Cemher Microne should not be directly applied over without correct preparation.
  • Natural timber that requires expansion
  • Large open expansion joints
.
If you have natural timber stairs, flooring or joinery it is best to remove them back to the original concrete slab or to screw and glue FC sheeting overtop first.

Can Microne be applied over existing tiles?

Yes, Microne can be applied directly over existing tiles, making it an ideal solution for renovations.
It’s essential that the tiles are secure, not drummy or loose, and that the surface is properly prepared. This includes removing any shine from the tile surface and filling grout lines using Microne Base to ensure a smooth, stable foundation.
With the right preparation, Microne transforms tiled surfaces into seamless, modern finishes with minimal demolition.

What preparation do tiles require?

Ensure existing tiles are sound. Replace any loose or drummy tiles. Use a dustless grinder to remove high points and gloss for better adhesion. Fill joins/grout lines with Microne Base.

Should I fill the grouted tile joins?

Yes. Fill tile joints with Microne Base and scrape flush to minimise build-up on the tile surface.

Once the grout lines are filled, can I start the system steps?

Yes, after grinding the tiles and filling the joints, allow 24 hours for curing before proceeding.
Next, apply Primer 100 over the entire surface, then tack mesh directly onto the substrate to reinforce the system. From there, follow the full application steps as outlined in the Microne Installation Guide.
Proper preparation ensures long-term performance and a flawless finish when applying Microne over tiles.

Does Cemher need a waterproofing membrane in a wet area?

Cemher Microcement is waterproof in every layer, providing excellent moisture resistance as part of the overall system.
However, its purpose is not to act as a standalone waterproofing membrane. To comply with Australian Building Codes, a compliant acrylic waterproofing membrane must be applied prior to microcement in wet areas.
This ensures the system meets AS 3740:2021 and performs as intended.

The waterproofing isn't flat, will this impact the system?

While performance won’t be affected, it's important to apply the waterproofing membrane smoothly and without lumps.Because the microcement system is only 3–4mm thick, any unevenness in the membrane can impact the final aesthetic. A smooth base ensures a flawless, high-end finish.

When applying Microne over concrete, do I need to moisture test?

Yes, when applying over concrete, the slab must be fully cured (minimum 28 days) and moisture levels must be below 5%.
Be sure to test multiple points across the surface to confirm consistent readings before proceeding with the application.

Should I fill the joints and screw holes in the wall sheets prior to applying microcement?

Yes, all joints should bepre-filled using a suitable wall filler or joint compoundto create a smooth, even surface.
Paintable Sikaflexmay also be used to fill screw holes if flexibility is needed. Proper preparation ensures a seamless and stable finish.

How do I prepare the substrate ready for Microne?

The surface must be clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, dirt, or loose paint. Any flaking or unstable coatings should be removed.
View the resources page for specifics

Do I need to level or patch the substrate before applying microne?

Yes, all joints, cracks, and imperfections must be filled using acompatible patching compound suited to your substrate.
The surface should beflat, smooth, and levelto ensure optimal adhesion and a flawless final finish.

How much height allowance should I leave for Cemher Microcement?

Allow for a total build-up of 3–4mm for the full floor system, and approximately 1.5mm for wall applications.

Can I apply Cemher over fresh new concrete, screed, or render?

No, these materials must be fully cured before applying microcement. Wait a minimum of 28 days after installing any cementitious substrate.
Always check the curing time of the specific product used, and ensure moisture levels are below 5% before beginning the application.

What if my substrate has moisture or is damp?

Any moisture issues must be resolvedbefore applying microcement. Cemher systems should only be applied oversound, dry substrateswith amoisture content below 5%, confirmed using a moisture meter.

MICRONE APPLICATION

Where can I apply Microne microcement?

Cemher microcement is the only true waterproof in every layer microcement and can be applied to multiple substrates and areas. These areas include, Wet areas, Bathrooms, Floors, Walls, Benchtops, Joinery, internal and external.

What system should I use in a bathroom or wet area?

For bathrooms and wet areas, you should use the full Cemher Microne system, which is the only microcement in Australia that is waterproof in every layer.
The system includes:
Primer 100, mesh, 2 coats of Microne Base, 2 coats of Microne Medium, and 2 coats of Aquapur 70 sealer – all available in a convenient 10m² kit.

Do I need to apply the full system in my bathroom walls and floors?

Yes, full system must be applied to bathrooms and wet areas. To view the system steps, please review our product guides

What is the system thickness?

The Cemher MicrOne full system is 3-4mm thick. the Wall system is 1.5mm thick

What is the best way to apply MicrOne microcement?

Please view the Cemher MicrOne installation video here - MicrOne Application Video

How should I apply microne to walls and floors?

Microcement can be applied smooth with no texture or can be highly textured with depth and pitting. Generally walls will have some texture by using a stamping technique found in the application video - MicrOne Application Guide
.

Floors are mostly troweled flat and smooth.

Should I sand between coats of microne?

Yes, sanding between coats is recommended to ensure a smooth, even finish and proper intercoat adhesion.
Use40–80 grit for the base coats and80–120 grit for the top coats, depending on the desired texture and finish.

What type of Sandpaper Should I use?

Avoid using generic coloured sandpapers dyed with oxides, as they can shed pigment and cause staining that may show through after sealing.
We always recommend using Mirka-branded sandpapers, such as Galaxy or Abranet Ace, which are high-quality, non-staining, and designed for precision work.
Use 40–80 grit for base coats and 80–120 grit for top coats for best results.
You can order them here: Cemher Tools Collection

What type of Sander should I use?

We recommend using a high-quality dustless sander with a HEPA filter to ensure clean site conditions and support health and safety during application.
Mirka dustless sanders are ideal for microcement work and trusted by professionals.
You can order them here: Cemher Tools Collection

Should I overlap the mesh?

No, we recommend butting the mesh edges together without overlapping, to avoid unnecessary build-up.
In corners, always use separate pieces for each surface rather than running the mesh through the corner. This ensures a cleaner finish and better adhesion.

What mesh should I use?

Mesh is required to be incorporated when using the full microne system. Use the Cemher Microcement Mesh, which is specifically designed for our system.
Thicker render mesh is not suitable, as Cemher coatings are only 3–4mm thick and require a lightweight mesh that won’t affect the finish.

How should I trowel out from the internal corners?

Always complete one surface at a time, trowelling out from the internal corner. Once that surface is dry, move to the adjacent wall.
This method avoids working beside a wet edge and helps maintain clean, precise corners for a more professional finish.

How should I trowel over bull nose edges?

The best method is to lightly roll your trowel over the edge during application, then correct any high points with light sanding once dry.
For a cleaner finish and less sanding, you can also pull a piece of plastic (like a plastic bag) across the edge while the product is still wet to smooth it out.

Can I coat directly over expansion joints?

Not without proper preparation. Do not apply microcement directly over open expansion joints.
You may fill the joint flush with paintable Sikaflex before applying the microcement system to improve adhesion. However, we recommend respecting all structural expansion joints as outlined in the Microne Product Guide.
Always follow the architect’s or engineer’s instructions specific to your project.

Should skirting boards be removed before starting?

It depends on the desired finish.
If the existing skirting boards are staying, tape 3–4mm above the floor line and apply the microcement up to the tape. Remove the tape after application for a clean, defined edge.
For a more minimal, seamless look, we recommend removing the skirting boards before starting and running the microcement flush to the wall.

Can Microne microcement be used in a bathroom niche?

Yes, Cemher MicrOne is suitable for use in all wet area substrates, including bathroom niches, as it is waterproof in every layer.

What Microcement trowels should I purchase?

The Cemher Finishing Trowel is a versatile option, ideal for both base and top coat applications.
For larger areas or base coat work, we recommend the Cemher Base Trowel, a flexible scraper is highly effective
